The first type

LOW SOLID MUD

• Oil in a solution of water
• Salty water with starch
• Water is not salty with bentonite and CMC

NHIBITIVE MUD

• Clay with salt saturated water
• Mud with salty water

• Clay treated with calcium

The second type

• Clay containing (20-25)% water
• Clay containing (3-5)% water

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF DRILLING MUD

• Clay weight (density)
  It is measured in units of pounds / gallons, gm / cm 3, pounds / foot 3, as well as pounds / inch 1000 feet (pressure gradient). The device that measures density is called a mud balance (MUD BALANCE).
• The apparent viscosity (MARSH FUNNEL VISCOSITY) , which is the time in seconds required to fill a volume of (946 cm 3) through the Marsh funnel, measured in seconds (SECOND).
  Note: The measured viscosity of water is 26 sec.
• FILTRATION LOSSES & MUD KAKE
  It is meant by the amount of water (cm3) filtered through a porous paper (FILTER PAPER) after applying pressure on a clay sample of (100) Pa/Ing 2 in a period of (30) minutes. The examination is carried out by means of the filter press, as well as by measuring the thickness of the mud cake in millimeters.
  Note: The filter is measured within (7.5) minutes, and the result is multiplied by (2).
• FBasal PH
  It is measured using paper that changes color according to (PH). There is also an electric device.
  Note:
  1. Water is a neutral solution (i.e. not bottomless or acidic) and its PH is equal to (7), as for basic solutions it is between (8-14) and for acidic solutions it is between 1-6
  2. The mud is alkaline because all the chemicals used do not undergo a chemical reaction unless the surroundings are alkaline. Therefore, before starting the threading operations, caustic soda is added to make the surroundings alkaline.
• Sand content
  It is the percentage of the amount of sand present in the excavation mud, measured by a sand content device.
  Note: The percentage of sand allowed for work ranges from (2-3)%, and there are some other important tests, but the five tests mentioned above are the most important tests that are conducted to know the initial properties of clay

Drilling Materials that GTS can supply

• BARITE
  It is a material used to raise the weight of clay up to (2.6 g / cm 3), and (GALENA) is used for high weights
• BENTONITE
  A substance used to increase viscosity and gelatinous strength and reduce water infiltration. Bentonite is characterized by a hydration ability, and it is known that salts affect the ability of bentonite to hydrate, so another substance is used with it to give the clay sufficient viscosity. and it's called
  By (ZEOGEL) or with (SALT CLAY) and added in a ratio of (1-1) or (3-1) to Benyonite
• CARBOXYL METHYL CELLULOSE (CMC)
  It is an organic substance used to control the leaching of water from mud, and it is of three types:
  1. High Viscosity (CMC-HV)
  2. Average Viscosity (REGULAR)
  3. Low viscosity (LV)
• ORIGIN (STARCH)
  It is a reducing material for filtration of liquids, especially in slurries with salt water and saturated with the plate. This material is used when the concentration (230,000 parts / million) and above and the basicity of the slurry is more than (11.5).
• BRIXEL
  As well as [XP-20, SPERSENE, Q - BROXEN] These materials neutralize the ions formed on the surface of the bentonite particles or any other clay material, and this helps the spread of materials and not collect them, as the agglomeration becomes agglomerated.
• SODIUM CARBONATE (SODA ASH)
  It is used to get rid of the effect of calcium ion (CA++) on clay. The calcium ion comes during the drilling of the layers (anhydrides, and gypsum), as these materials reduce (PH) and raise the viscosity and gelatinous strength.
• SODIUM BICARBONATE (SOD. BEC.)
  It is used to precipitate calcium ion in case of clay contamination with cement.
• CAUSTIC SODA (COSTIC SODA)
  An incendiary chemical that controls the alkalinity of clay (PH) and it is one of the important materials that is used by primary mixing to prevent the aggregation of particles and raise the viscosity, as well as the dissolution of the two compounds in the two materials.
